Irwin and Colton are delighted to be partnering exclusively with Eton College to identify a new Director of Health and Safety. This role will lead the development, implementation and monitoring of all health and safety activities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of pupils, staff, and visitors within the College and the various state of the art facilities within the estate.

Leading a small team of specialists, and working closely with the Leadership Team, you will play a critical role in upholding Eton's commitment to providing a safe, secure and nurturing environment that supports academic excellence, personal development, and community engagement.

Responsibilities of the Director of Health and Safety role will include:

  • Working closely with the Provost and Fellows (the governing body), Head Master, Lower Master and Bursar, to continually develop and enhance the school's approach to health and safety
  • Ensuring thorough and appropriate risk assessments are conducted across all areas of the school, including academic buildings, boarding houses, sports facilities and common areas
  • Partnering with a variety of key stakeholders across the school, including Department Heads, the Leadership Team, and with external stakeholders to foster a culture of safety and promote a coordinated approach
  • Developing and reviewing a comprehensive suite of health and safety policies, procedures and guidelines that are tailored to the distinctive needs of Eton and in alignment with relevant legislation, standards, and best practice
  • Provide leadership to the Health and Safety team, helping them to develop their skills, provide an excellent service to stakeholders and enhance the credibility of the health and safety within the wider school

The successful Director of Health and Safety candidate will have:

  • Experience in leading a health and safety function and team, ideally within an education, university or related organisation
  • A degree, relevant professional qualifications and ideally Chartered membership of a relevant industry body (i.e. CMIOSH)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Prior experience of working with varied and demanding stakeholders, ideally within the creative or academic sectors, and ability to adapt your style to meet different needs
  • A good understanding of safeguarding procedures or willingness to learn is essential (as per the Keeping Children Safe in Education 2023 guidance)

This is an excellent opportunity to join a world-renowned institution and take the leading role for Health and Safety. For further information, please contact Oscar Dale on or (phone number removed) to discuss further and apply.
